Al was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB. He spent 15 years with the Air Force as a Clerk Statistician (Administrator); stationed in the Middle East, Norway, Germany and France. During that time he was a light-weight boxer.
Following his tour of duty, he became a furniture mover for a number of years; and then went into janitorial work.
In October 1971 he married his wife, Velma. Between them they had 6 children, and had a 7th together. He is a grandfather of 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In 1982 Al suffered a serious back injury and while in hospital, God finally got a hold of him, and he turned his life over to Christ. He was baptized here at Broadway Church by then pastor, Bob Friesen.
In July 2003 Velma was hired here at Broadway as the janitor. Al, while still working as a janitor at a private school, also came and worked alongside her. When Velma retired in 2006, Al took over as the full time custodian.
He takes his work very seriously. He knows at any given moment how many chairs or tables are on hand, or have been moved from one room to another. He takes great pride in his work, and sees beyond his ‘job description’.
He is a very caring and compassionate man, being ‘grandpa’ to many little ones here at Broadway, always ready with a hug and a twinkle in his eye. He sees his job as a ministry and pours his whole heart into it, helping wherever he sees a need. He is a greeter to many who come through the doors at Broadway, whether it be for a blood donor clinic, a school group, or a newcomer on a Sunday, helping them find where they need to go, and making them feel welcome and special.
